The fruit for our 2021 Chambourcin was grown at our home vineyard in Stewartstown, PA, from a vineyard block originally planted back in the 1990s.  Chambourcin is a French-American interspecific variety that was hybridized by the French in the 19th century as a way to combat the scourge of phyloxerra that had decimated their vineyards.  (Fun fact: phyloxerra is native to North America.)  Today, the Beaujolais region in France is home to the largest plantings of this variety, and in my mind the name is a play on the Burgundian region Chambertin. 

The fruit makes wine reminiscent of Beujolais-Village wines.  These are not wines meant for aging, but rather for immediate enjoyment and consumption.  (Not quite as immediate as Beaujolais Nouveau, but definitely not meant to be cellared for any appreciable time.) 

Our 2021 Chambourcin was aged in stainless steel tanks to produce a bright and fruit-forward wine.  The lighter mouthfeel is silky with enough acidity to pair well with most lighter summer entrees.  It's a red wine for when it's too hot out for Merlot or Cabernet Sauvigon.  A perfect everyday drinker for this time of year.
